To Grow in Life, You Have to Take Risks
To Grow in Life, You Have to Take Risks –
One morning, while having breakfast at a local restaurant, I witnessed an incident that left a lasting impression on me.
The restaurant manager was standing in the middle of the room, visibly upset. Several table boys stood before him with their heads bowed in silence.
Curious about what had happened, I quietly observed the situation.
The manager spoke loudly and firmly.
“A small bottle of herbal tooth powder worth only five taka has been broken.
Yet none of you has the honesty and courage to admit who did it.
This is not a crime. It is simply a mistake. Mistakes happen because people are human.
They happen through carelessness, not necessarily through bad intentions. Such mistakes can be forgiven.
But what disappoints me is that none of you has the courage to tell the truth.”
The boys remained silent.
The manager continued:
“Think about it. Even if we consider this an offense, what is the worst possible punishment?
At most, someone would have to pay for the damaged bottle. The loss is very small.
But have you considered the greater loss?
If you cannot tell the truth about a small mistake, people may eventually see you as dishonest.
One day, someone may commit a much bigger mistake and stay silent again. Then the consequences could be far more serious.”
His words immediately captured my attention.
He went on:
“Never forget that mistakes are part of being human.
The right thing to do is to admit them, learn from them, and improve yourself.
Deliberately doing wrong is different—that becomes a true offense.
But there is another lesson here.
If you are not willing to take a risk worth only five taka today, how will you ever take bigger risks in life?
How will you build a successful future?”
The room became completely silent.
The manager’s voice softened, but his message became even stronger.
“To achieve something meaningful in life, you must learn to take risks.
You must learn to accept small losses. Only then can you create greater gains.
If you are afraid to admit a mistake that costs five taka, how will you handle the challenges that come with bigger responsibilities?
- Success requires courage.
- Growth requires courage.
- Life requires courage.”
Still, no one stepped forward.
No one admitted responsibility.
After waiting for a few moments, the manager made an announcement.
“Very well. Since nobody is willing to tell the truth, I have made a decision.
Five taka will be deducted from everyone’s salary this month.”
Immediately, the workers looked at one another in surprise.
One of them finally spoke.
“Sir, the bottle itself was worth only five taka. Why should everyone lose five taka?”
For the first time, the manager smiled.
“Very simple,” he replied. “Since no one is willing to admit responsibility, I must assume that everyone shares responsibility.”
The room fell silent again.
Then something remarkable happened.
One young worker stepped forward and said:
“Sir, I broke the bottle. Please deduct the money from my salary alone.
Why should everyone else suffer because of my mistake?”
The manager’s face brightened.
“Well done,” he said. “That is exactly the honesty and courage I was hoping to see.”
Then he continued:
“You have demonstrated integrity.
People who have the courage to accept responsibility often go much farther in life than those who spend their lives hiding from the truth.
I forgive you.
No money will be deducted from anyone’s salary.
Now return to your work and perform your responsibilities carefully.
- Problems will always exist. Mistakes will happen. But build the courage to face them honestly.
- Courage illuminates life, and an illuminated life can take you farther than you ever imagined.”
As I sat there listening, his words struck me deeply.
It felt as though someone was repeatedly knocking on the door of my mind, saying:
“Learn to take risks. Learn to take risks.”
The lesson was much bigger than a broken bottle.
The real lesson was about responsibility, honesty, and personal growth.
Many people dream of success, yet they avoid every situation that involves uncertainty.
They want rewards without risk. They want progress without sacrifice. They want achievement without accountability.
But life rarely works that way.
- Every meaningful achievement involves some degree of risk.
- Starting a business is a risk.
- Pursuing a dream is a risk.
- Learning a new skill is a risk.
- Speaking the truth is a risk.
- Taking responsibility for a mistake is a risk.
- Yet these are the very actions that help people grow.
The individuals who succeed are not those who never make mistakes.
They are the ones who have the courage to face their mistakes, learn from them, and move forward. That morning, the restaurant manager taught a lesson that extended far beyond the walls of his restaurant.
- If we want to grow, we must stop fearing small losses.
- We must stop hiding from responsibility.
- We must develop the courage to face the consequences of our actions.
- Because the truth is simple:
- To grow in life, you have to take risks.
- And to take risks successfully, you must have the courage to face whatever follows.
